Incumbent Scott McBrayer is running against Ward 1 Representative Michael Hallman for his seat as mayor, a position he has held for the past eight years.
McBrayer has lived in Homewood since 1988 and is the managing director of Ridout's Valley Chapel funeral home. Aside from his eight years as mayor, McBrayer also served two terms on city council and is on the board for the Lakeshore Foundation and Community Grief Support.
McBrayer said he wants Homewood to continue on the path that it has been on. This includes the road improvements recently funded by the city council, investing in parks, building sidewalks and supporting the school system and emergency personnel.
"As CEO of the city, my job is to ensure we are operating efficiently each day, working within a budget, and carrying out the directives of the council. I have been so fortunate to have neighbors on the council who have shared my vision for this city. I am proud to serve with them and I am grateful you have allowed me to serve as mayor," McBrayer said.
Since he started as mayor, McBrayer said he has seen the city's financial situation improve and that Homewood has made state and national lists for walkability and being a good place to raise a family.
"When I was elected eight years ago as mayor, I felt our city had become complacent. There was not much development, our city was not in a good financial situation, and Homewood was not attracting many young people to our city. Today we have a vibrant economy and have had surpluses every single year for the past eight years," McBrayer said.
