Charging for Documents

It was conveyed to me that the City was not going to let citizens view documents for free that they would charge $5 per - is that not correct? Only the State Bill stated citizens could view for free? Please clarify.

Free viewing of documents and electronic copies

Currently the city allows free viewing of documents and electronic copies, but does charge for physical copies. Cities generally are allowed to charge a reasonable fee for copies of either kind but must allow viewing of publicly available documents. It is our understanding that the state bill sets limits on what can be charged, but the free viewing was already in place. The city also has not expressed an interest in changing its policy toward viewing and receiving electronic copies of documents.
