Grades: Junior Pre-K through eighth grade
Since 1950, Advent Episcopal School has been a center for curiosity, exploration and growth, giving young minds a place to thrive. We provide students with a superior education in a caring, Christian environment to prepare them for a life of continued learning, leadership and service.
That preparation begins in our classrooms. This year we launched our Junior Pre-K program, allowing us to lay the foundation for excellence early and give our students a headstart when they enter Pre-K.
The program is open to students as young as 3 and is designed to prepare students for an advanced curriculum. Our youngest students build in-depth basic skills and fine motor skills. They’ll focus on the alphabet, numbers, shapes and, most importantly, mastering the art of exploration. Seeking knowledge is something we instill in all of our students from Junior Pre-K through eighth grade.
At every grade level, Advent students are provided with a rigorous and advanced curriculum. We give our students the knowledge, encouragement and support they need to keep building on that foundation when they enter high school, college and beyond.
Our location, in the heart of downtown Birmingham, gives us the ability to extend the learning experience beyond the walls of the classroom. Our students are within walking distance of Birmingham's greatest cultural and entertainment venues. Often, our field trips occur right in our backyard, from regular visits to the downtown public library to afternoon swim lessons at our local YMCA.
Students are encouraged to broaden their perspectives through meaningful exposure and experiences in arts, athletics, and foreign languages. All of our students take French, art and music classes each week. Meaningful, consistent exposure to fine art, music, and foreign languages spurs intellectual curiosity among our students.
Athletics also play an important role in the life of our school. Participation in team and individual sports helps our students develop discipline, teamwork, collaboration and self-confidence. Many of our students are athletes who participate in cross-country, soccer, basketball or volleyball.
Advent is small by design. Our 10-to-1 student-teacher ratio allows us to ensure that all students are loved, supported and known — both for who they are now and who they are yet to become. Students joining the Advent roster in higher grade levels receive a personalized plan to help them transition smoothly, both academically and socially. Our community of faculty, staff, students and parents fosters a feeling of family that encourages personal growth and helps children develop a strong sense of responsibility and a positive sense of self.
With students and faculty from every corner of Birmingham and representing varied and diverse backgrounds, our school is a true reflection of our community. Advent strives to cultivate a respectful and appreciative spirit of excellence. We believe in unity, not uniformity, and in the unique worth and beauty of all human beings as creations of a loving, gracious God.
The extraordinary educational experience at Advent nurtures bright, confident, courageous, creative and kind citizens of the world. Our students succeed and excel not only at Advent but in their high school, college, professional and personal lives.
