This Friday night, when the John Carroll Catholic High School football team hosts Springville, the most significant action will take place outside of the competition between the two teams.
John Carroll will name its football field "Pat Sullivan Football Field," in honor of its legendary quarterback. Sullivan was a star athlete at John Carroll in the late 1960s, and went on to win the Heisman Trophy at Auburn University in 1971.
Sullivan will participate in the pregame coin toss and the field will officially be dedicated in Sullivan's honor at halftime.
Sullivan was named the MVP of the 1972 Senior Bowl before playing five seasons in the NFL. He also spent many years as a college coach, including an eight-year stint at Samford University.
Sullivan is a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame and the National High School Hall of Fame.
