Former Homewood High and current Nebraska Cornhusker star running back/kick returner Ameer Abdullah was named this morning as one of five finalists for the Paul Hornung Award as college football's most versatile player.
A panel of 16 sports journalists and former NFL stars -- plus one vote from an online fans vote -- will select the winner, which will be announced on Friday, Dec. 12. The winner and his family will be honored at a banquet in January in Louisville, Ky., the hometown of Hornung, the Notre Dame Heisman Trophy winner, Green Bay Packer and member of both the college and pro football halls of fame.
The Louisville Sports Commission administers the award, which was first awarded in 2010.
The other finalists are TCU running back/kick returner B.J. Catalon; Stanford wide receiver/kick returner Ty Montgomery; Missouri running back.kick returner Marcus Murphy; and Washington linebacker/running back Shaq Thompson.
