The Reset: Boys basketball advances to sub-regional

BASKETBALL

The Homewood girls basketball team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday evening, as the Lady Patriots fell to Shades Valley 40-31 in the opening round of the Class 6A, Area 10 tournament. Zoe Watts led the team with 16 points, and Caidyn Cannon added 11 points. Watts and Maya Maxwell were the team’s two seniors, and the Lady Patriots finished the year with a 10-18 mark.

Also on Wednesday, the Homewood boys team stormed back in the final quarter to knock off Shades Valley 38-34, keeping its season alive in the opening round of the area tournament. Read about guard Bo Barber’s heroics in that contest here.

The boys fell to Huffman 63-44 on Friday in the area tournament final, but they will take their 23-9 overall mark into sub-regional play this Tuesday, when the Patriots travel to Pinson Valley at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the regional tournament in Jacksonville on Friday.


WRESTLING

The Homewood wrestling team competed in the Class 6A North Super Section tournament over the weekend and will send 10 wrestlers to the state tournament, as the team finished sixth overall with 117 points. Carlos Miguel Figueroa won the 220-pound weight class, and Leandro Nichols, Graham Miner, Hudson Jones, Abduldayam Maflahi, Ehab Almansoob, John-Mark Crocker, Roy Streiff, Levi Miller and Elias Trejo also qualified for the state tournament in Huntsville this weekend.


TENNIS

The Homewood tennis teams opened their 2019 seasons last Tuesday. The boys team defeated Saint James 8-1, while the girls team fell by an identical score.


LACROSSE

The Homewood boys lacrosse team opened its season last Friday, as the Patriots fell to Oak Mountain 12-5.
