The Homewood High School football team participated in its first play date of the summer on Thursday, June 30.

To break up the monotony of summer training, the Patriots engaged in organized team activities with Briarwood Christian School for just over an hour and a half on the Lions' practice field.

"It was just nice to face somebody different," Homewood head coach Ben Berguson said. "The last three weeks we've just been going against each other, and we've made a lot strides over the last few weeks."

Initially, the teams played three on three, with each offense swapping possession every few plays. After a little while, they switched to seven on seven.

Berguson said he was pleased by the performance of his quarterbacks, sophomore Larkin Williams and junior Tyler Hatcher. The two are battling for the starting job, though Berguson said he hasn't ruled out the possibility of running a dual-quarterback system.

Both signal-callers delivered a number of crisp passes throughout the play date.

"Both quarterbacks did a great job today," Berguson said.

At receiver, Logan Padgett hauled in a flurry of catches. The 6-foot-5 sophomore used his combination of size and quickness to create open space.

Running back Chestin Jones also notched a promising performance. The senior showcased his breakaway speed multiple times, blowing past opposing defensive backs.

"He's going to be great," Berguson said.

The Patriots will return to intersquad action July 13-14, when they co-host the 7 on 7 Team Passing Camp at Samford University.
