Homewood City Schools has announced two new high school coaches, but both men are familiar names.

Kevin Tubbs, who has served as the school system's athletic director for the past five seasons, will move over a seat on the bench and assume the head coaching duties for the girls basketball program, as he has been an assistant with the program for the past two seasons. He will also retain his duties as athletic director.

“After serving this incredible program as an assistant for the past two seasons, it is with tremendous pride and honor that I accept the position of head coach. I deeply appreciate the support of the players, parents, and administration during this period of transition,” Tubbs said in a release.

The position was made vacant when JoVanka Ward accepted a position at Thompson High School. Prior to being named athletic director, Tubbs had a 185-73 record as head coach of the Mountain Brook High School girls basketball team.

Sean McBride is returning to Homewood High School after two seasons as the head women's soccer coach at Birmingham-Southern College. He will coach the boys soccer team and teach history. Prior to his stint at BSC, McBride worked as a history teacher and soccer coach at Homewood for 13 years. During that time, the Patriots won four state championships.

“Having worked at HHS for 14 years as a coach and 13 years as a teacher, I am honored to have the opportunity to teach again in a very special place that sets the standards for other schools in this state and country,” McBride said in a letter to the superintendent.  “HHS is a unique place with a supportive and involved community.”
