Over the course of the year, The Homewood Star will keep you up to date on the various Homewood and John Carroll high school sports teams.


FOOTBALL

Homewood

Homewood’s football team has started the season by splitting its first two games. The Patriots opened the season on Thursday, Aug. 23, with an 18-7 win over Hueytown in the HPM Kickoff Classic at Samford. Last Friday, the Patriots endured a two-hour, 45-minute rain delay but came up short in a 17-10 loss to Vestavia Hills.

This week, the Patriots begin region play against Pelham on Friday at 7 p.m. at Waldrop Stadium.

John Carroll

John Carroll began the season with a 45-0 loss to St. Clair County, but played much better last Friday against Leeds. The Cavs endured a weather delay, but came up short to fall to 0-2 on the year.

This week, the Cavs travel to Fairfield on Friday.


VOLLEYBALL

Homewood

Homewood opened its volleyball season on Tuesday, Aug. 28, with a loss to Vestavia Hills (14-25, 16-25, 11-25). On Thursday, the Patriots fell in a tight five-set match to John Carroll (19-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-23, 9-15).

This week, Homewood visits Huffman on Tuesday and travels to Oak Mountain on Thursday. Over the weekend, the Patriots will play in Auburn’s tournament.

John Carroll

John Carroll’s volleyball team knocked off local rival Homewood in five sets on Thursday, Aug. 30, in its season opener (25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9). Over the weekend, the Cavs played in the Juanita Boddie Tournament, hosted by Hoover at the Finley Center. In pool play, the Cavs fell to Houston (20-25, 9-25) and McGill-Toolen (7-25, 10-25) before defeating Riverdale (25-19, 25-20). In Silver bracket play, John Carroll knocked off Fairhope (27-25, 25-15) before falling in three sets to Hartselle (15-25, 25-16, 13-15).

This week, John Carroll travels to Pelham on Tuesday and hosts Spain Park on Thursday.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Homewood’s cross-country teams opened the season on Saturday at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic. The girls finished sixth while the boys finished in a tie for seventh in the prestigious event. Will Stone finished second overall with a time of 15:32.85. Carson Bedics, Jack Gray, Jon Fielding Stogner, Jack Harchelroad, Brady Cassell, and Logan Justice also ran for the boys.

Lainey Phelps finished fourth (18:50.76) on the girls side, with Edie Smith, Celie Jackson, Victoria Thompson, Audrey Nabors, Laura Kemper and Zoe Nichols also running.
