Homewood High star defensive end Griffin Gentry remains committed to Troy for now, but the 6-foot-3, 265-pound senior has been given something to think about.

South Carolina offered a scholarship at halftime of Thursday night's 27-3 win over Jackson-Olin.

"He got an official offer from the University of South Carolina at halftime," Homewood coach Ben Berguson said. "I was really happy about that. That'll help with the whole recruiting deal, the whole process now."

Now that he has an SEC offer, that might open up more interest from that caliber school. Gentry had committed to Troy in August, and he said he remains committed for now.

"It  was really unexpected," Gentry said after the game. "I didn;t see it coming at all. Coach Berg came to me at the half and told me I had an official offer from South Carolina, and I got a big smile on my face," Gentry said -- who still had a big smile on his face. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm still committed to Troy."
