Homewood hosts prestigious Blalock tournament this weekend
The 27th annual Blalock Memorial Volleyball Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Homewood High School.
Twenty of the top teams across the state will participate in this prestigious tournament, which benefits the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama. One dollar of every ticket sold goes to the foundation. The tournament is named in honor of Margaret Blalock, a pioneer in women’s sports and especially volleyball at both the college and high school level, who died in 1989 after a courageous fight with cancer. The tournament was first held at the University of Montevallo, where Blalock had established the women’s athletics program, and moved to the current site, Homewood, shortly afterward. Current Homewood volleyball coach Carol Chesnutt was a student of Blalock’s at UM.
Besides the host school, among the top teams in attendance will be Mountain Brook, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Pelham, John Carroll, Bob Jones, Sparkman, Ramsay, Hewitt-Trussville, Grissom and McGill-Toolen.
Pool play begins Friday at 4:30 p.m. with play on four courts in both the competition gym and the practice gym. Pool play continues Saturday at 8 a.m. Tournament play will begin at approximately 1:30 Saturday afternoon.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink. The Blalock Scholarship will be awarded at approximately 1:15 Saturday before tournament play begins.
Admission is $8 per day or $15 for a weekend pass.
