Homewood took care of business against John Carroll on Thursday night, winning 89-63 in the first round of the Class 6A, Area 9 Tournament, held at Homewood High School.

The first quarter was an up-tempo affair for the Patriots, as they got the crowd into it early and outscored John Carroll 25-6.

Luke Touiliatos and Ronald Claiborne drained threes in the quarter and CD Daniels capped it off with a shot from deep at the buzzer.

Touiliatos led the Patriots with 17 points in the contest to go along with five rebounds. Daniels filled up the stat sheet, scoring 13, pulling down six rebounds, and dishing out five assists.

Austin Patterson converted an and-one baskets after the foul and had a couple steals in that opening frame, including one in which he threw the ball up ahead to Touiliatos for the layup. Patterson finished with three and-ones in the game, 14 points, and five assists.

The second quarter was much of the same for the Patriots, as they went into the halftime with a 49-19 edge. Trey Jemison took advantage of his size down low, and scored eight points in the quarter with an array of post moves.

Jemison scored 15 and pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds for the game.

The third and fourth quarters allowed Homewood to empty the bench. The student section erupted when Peyton Mizerany dropped a three-pointer in the third quarter, and once again when Jake Burdeshaw scored.

Burdeshaw and Chris Miller scored six each for Homewood. Peyton Brown and Logan Padgett added five apiece.

Homewood shot 53% from the field for the game.

Jackson Hughes was one of three Cavaliers in double figures, with 18 points. Alex Mitchell scored 12, and Ben Saway added 11.

With the win, the Patriots clinch a spot in the sub-regional round of the state playoffs.

They will play in the area championship on Saturday at 5 p.m.
