Homewood Athletic Foundation holds inaugural Cornapalooza Tournament

The Homewood Athletic Foundation raised around $10,000 at its inaugural cornhole tournament this weekend.

John Wallace, who organized the event, said there were about 200 people at the tournament. Overall, he said the Cornapalooza Tournament was a success.

"For the first time, I was really pleased with the involvement," he said.

The event included a cornhole tournament, drinks from Good People Brewery and food from La Paz. Attendees would stop by, pay the $30 fee and receive drinks and appetizers, Wallace said. Rather than keep people hanging around, he said the idea was to have a steady flow of people.

Wallace said they plan to hold the event again next year, and while the date will depend on Homewood's basketball schedule, they plan to hold it around the same time of year and time of day.

"If we can duplicate the same thing we did this year next year, I think we'd be happy with that," Wallace said.

Next year, they hope to have former Homewood athletes at the event. He said this year they had hoped for Ameer Abdullah or Evan Mathis attend, but surgeries and the Super Bowl prevented that from being a possibility.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the foundation, which supports Homewood City Schools' middle and high school sports.
