Homewood’s boys golf team faced an eight-shot deficit after Round 1 of the Class 6A state championship, but stormed back on the second day to defeat Spanish Fort by two strokes at Hampton Cove in Huntsville, the first state title in Homewood golf history.

“I am really proud of how the guys played the second round,” coach Keat Litton said. “Facing an eight-shot deficit after Round 1 could have had them down. Instead, they were determined and it showed from the first hole.”

Four of Homewood’s five competitors birdied the first hole on the second day to set the tone for the comeback. Jack Poole fired an even-par 72 for his best round of the year, and finished 10th overall.

Litton said Jack Goldasich’s 32 on the front nine in the second round put pressure on Spanish Fort. A couple of bogeys and a solid double-bogey save on the back nine sent him to his even-par day.

Goldasich shot 72 both days, and led the team with a 144 over the two days. His even-par total set a two-day school record, and he finished tied for fifth.

Spanish Fort shot a 290 on the first day, but receded to 303 to finish the tournament, while Homewood improved upon a first-day 298 with a 293 to get the win.

Connor Doyal finished with a 147 after rounds of 73 and 74, and was a solid player all season long, coming home eighth. Ben Harris overcame some adversity and improved by a stroke in the second round, shooting 76 and 75 for a total of 151 and a 11th place finish. Ford Goldasich fired a 159 for 15th spot.

“The guys continued to get better as the season went on and it showed this week,” Litton said.
