Homewood City Schools has announced Ben Berguson will be the new head football coach for Homewood High School.

Berguson has served as the assistant football coach to the Patriots for the past three years, and he had been serving as the interim head football coach since Feb. 26.

“It is an honor to be a member of the Homewood Patriots,” Berguson said. “The Homewood community is enriched with tradition, and I look forward to continuing that rich history.”

Berguson also noted the pride he places in the school’s players.

“These young men have tremendous work ethic and passion for the game,” he said. “I am excited to be working with them and fulfilling the system’s mission to empower students to reach their unique potential on an off the field.”

HHS Principal Dr. Zack Barnes said Coach Berguson knows the program inside and out and has tremendous respect from the players.

“As an assistant coach or as head coach, he is a true Patriot,” Barnes said. “We are excited to have his continued leadership in Homewood.”

Athletic Director Kevin Tubbs agreed that Berguson has a wealth of experience as a football coach.

“We are very excited to have a coach with his knowledge of the game right here in Homewood,” Tubbs said. “Coach Berguson is a leader beyond the football field, and he is dedicated to the students and teaching them the steps to be successful on the field and in the classroom.”

Berguson will also teach physical education and drivers education at HHS. He said he is looking forward to spring practice with the team and working hard for the upcoming season.

“I appreciate our players and the community during this coaching transition," Berguson said. "Our players understand the great Homewood tradition, and they have continued to remain focused. I am honored to serve the students, faculty, and Homewood community, and I look forward to preparing these young men not only for success on the field, but also in life.”
