Shades Cahaba Elementary first graders shared opinion writing pieces with Homewood community members during a celebration at their school.

Students wrote about their favorite things, including dogs, Star Wars, Publix, Bass Pro Shop, Wafflers, Steel City Pops and mermaids, and held a presentation of their work on Feb. 18.

The students were able to pick their favorite works, and those pieces were put together in a book format with pictures.

Community attendees included city council member Peter Wright, Homewood Public Library head of children’s services Laura Tucker, Mayor Scott McBrayer, soccer club coach Mason Cook, Police Chief Tim Ross, SCE principal John Lowry, assistant principal Wendy Story and technology specialist Lindsay Galafassi. Representatives from Homewood sanitation, the fire department and Homewood City Schools also attended.
