OLS students combine life skills and algebra in project

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School eighth-graders took part in a project that combined math, career goals and creativity.

The algebra assignment was completed over the course of two months. During the project, students managed living expenses and financing a home. They also learned about choosing a career, determining personal experiences and purchasing a home. 

Students also created a prototype home or flipbook representing their chosen residence.

“It is always exciting to see how these young students analyze, evaluate and creatively apply what they learn in math to a real life situation,” said OLS eighth-grade math teacher Renee Williams. “They seem to take a special interest in math with more confidence when they apply it to themselves and their future, and that makes it more fun for everyone involved.”
