In June, 15 students and adults from John Carroll Catholic High School explored Peru with EF Tours.

The trip’s sponsors, Lane Geurtsen and Linda Richardson, wanted the focus of the trip to be language immersion and service learning. Participants worked in a girls’ dormitory constructing a fence, painting doors and preparing for a sustainable garden.

Daily language lessons with a facilitator prepared students to talk with local merchants, negotiate prices and form friendships with the residents of the dormitory where they provided service. The group also had the opportunity to explore ancient ruins, such as Sacsayhuaman and Machu Picchu, as well as explore the Sacred Valley, participate in a cooking class and take part in a weaving demonstration at a women’s cooperative.
