The Homewood Board of Education elected its officers for the 2016-2017 school year at its May 19 meeting.

Vice President Jill Kimbrell will be president, board member Judy Truitt will be vice president and Homewood schools Superintendent Bill Cleveland will be secretary.

Kimbrell will replace outgoing President Charlie Douthit.

“There isn’t a team I’d rather serve with: central office, all our administrators, faculty, staff and this board. It’s just an incredible group of people,” Kimbrell said. “I thank you for that and it makes it a pleasure.”

Additionally, the board recognized a trio of Homewood High School athletic achievements.

Led by head coach Tom Esslinger, the girls track and field team clinched its third straight outdoor state title at the AHSAA 4A-7A meet on May 7. Three days later, head coach Keat Litton and his boys golf team brought home the first blue map  in program history.

The pair of championship performances helped the high school secure another distinguished honor: the All-Sports Trophy presented by the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham.

The award was founded in 1982 and recognizes the area’s top high school athletic program. Never in its 36-year history has the traveling trophy taken up residence on the Homewood High campus.

“It’s just great to see the kids be successful,” HHS Athletic Director Kevin Tubbs said. “That trophy just kind of solidifies what we’ve done across the board. We don’t have just a great football or a great basketball team, we take care of all of our sports the same, so it’s very gratifying to me for somebody to notice that.”
