Five students named National Merit Semifinalists

Five Homewood High School students have been named National Merit Semifinalists in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Laine Smith, Daniel Spieler, Katie Gardner, Maggie Gauntt and Houston Wingo.

About 1.4 million high school juniors nationwide entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships worth $33 million, which will be awarded in the spring. To be considered for a merit scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.
