For 112 years, Vulcan has symbolized civic pride, leadership and progress. To continue the legacy, the Vulcan Materials Company seeks and awards individuals who exhibit the same qualities. On Nov. 3, the company will host the third annual Vulcans Community Awards banquet at The Club.

The company will welcome Rick Journey from WBRC Fox 6 News as this year’s emcee. The event co-chairs consist of Mayor William A. Bell, President and CEO of Vulcan Materials Company J. Thomas Hill and Marie Manning, retired Superintendent of Education for the St. Clair County School System.

“There are teachers, business owners, parents, public servants and thousands of others positively impacting our lives every day, and The Vulcans is a meaningful way to honor their contributions to society,” said Darlene Negrotto, President and CEO of Vulcan Park Foundation.

Only residents living in Birmingham’s seven county region — Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby and Walker — are eligible to win the awards. However, nominations are open to the general public and can be recommended through the Vulcans Community Awards website. The 2016 nominations will close on July 31.

“We hope nominations will include people who may otherwise go unnoticed including friends, family, co-workers, parishioners, mentors and others,” Negrotto said.

The Vulcans Community Awards are divided among five categories: Lifetime Achievement, Hero, Servant Leadership, Newcomer and Gamer Changer. Morgan Berney, Director of Marketing and PR at Vulcan Park and Museum, said each category is split into two levels — Vulcans and Spears — allowing more than one winner. However, only the Vulcan award will be given for Lifetime Achievement.

“These awards celebrate citizens from all walks of life for accomplishing inspirational things in every community of the seven-county Birmingham region,” Negrotto said.
