Runners, walkers gather for inaugural Backpacks for Birmingham 5K

The first Backpacks for Birmingham 5K and fun run was held this weekend at Patriot Park. Around 130 people gathered at the event, which aimed to raise money to provide backpacks and school supplies for local elementary, middle and high school students.

The event drew runners, volunteers and Birmingham-based band The Onlys. While final fundraising numbers are not in, Nathan Prather said the event raised well over $1,300.

“It was such an amazing first year,” Prather said.
