It might be easy for folks to think ballet performances of choreographer George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker” happen everywhere at Christmas.

But that’s not at all the case.

Only eight dance companies in the world have licenses to perform his famous version of Tschaikovsky’s renowned ballet, and Alabama Ballet is one of them.

So it’s an uncommon opportunity that area residents have to see the exquisite ballet with its extravagant sets and costumes, said Mandy McDaniel, marketing manager of Alabama Ballet.

“The Nutcracker” will be performed at Samford University’s Wright Center Dec. 11-13 and 18-20 at 7:30 p.m., as well as Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m.

Dozens of dancers portraying toy soldiers, mischievous mice and, of course, the Sugarplum Fairy create an unforgettable experience for those attending the ballet.

The Nutcracker Boutique will also be located in the Wright Center’s lower lobby and will be open before each performance and during intermission to offer an array of beautifully decorated nutcrackers.
