National Night Out returns for its second year Aug. 2.

The event pairs with the West Homewood Farmer’s Market and lets residents meet members of the Homewood Police and Fire Departments as well as shop for local food.

Police Deputy Chief Bob Copus announced that the two would team up once again for a special event on Aug. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will be at Shades Valley Community Church.

The farmers market began on June 7 and runs every Tuesday through Aug. 30. It will operate as usual on National Night Out.

The event will boast a lot of activities, and the police department will provide crime tips.

Copus said that he hopes residents will learn as much information about crime as possible.

“Our goal is to prevent crime in Homewood,” he said.

One piece of advice he gave is to always lock your car. Copus said people often leave their cars unlocked and leave valuable items such as phones, laptops and even their own keys lying on the seat.

National Night Out also will include kids activities, crime stoppers, police officers, equipment and prizes.
