The Homewood Public Library joined Harry Potter fans around the world with its first celebration of Harry Potter Book Night.

The international event celebrating J.K. Rowling's beloved series is in its second year, but this was the first celebration by the library.

Nearly 300 children and young-at-heart enjoyed Potter-themed activities and snacks, as well as a screening of the first film, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

The event was staffed by volunteers from the library's Teen Advisory Board, which was established in September.

The volunteers helped children construct Womping Willow Bonsai Trees, try different fizzy "potions," practice their Quiddich skills and navigate through an obstacle course. Guests could also enjoy snacks based on items in the series. Participants received a "diploma" for practicing their magic skills, and door prizes were given away at the close of the evening.

"It's amazing to work with such a creative team," teen librarian Judith Wright said.
