Doug Phillips, host of the Emmy award-winning TV series “Discovering Alabama” spoke to members of the Edgewood Garden Club on March 16.

Phillips talked about how his show began, noting that three decades ago, as an educator at the University of Alabama, he led teachers on trips to state parks to explain their ecology and historical importance to the state.

When teachers said they wished more children could benefit from Phillips’ information, he said the idea for the show was born. The first six shows were successful, and Phillips said he was encouraged to continue. “Discovering Alabama” is entering its 32nd year on the air, and it has an audience of adults and children. The show is shown in schools across Alabama, and it is accompanied by a state-approved K-12 curriculum guide for teachers.

Former teachers in the audience at Edgewood Garden Club recalled Phillips’ long-time association with Homewood City Schools, and many said he inspired them to pass along their knowledge of Alabama’s biodiversity.

Phillips said in the early days of “Discovering Alabama,” he was searching for someone else to serve as host. When no one else come forward for the job, he stepped in to the role. Now, he is a one-person production, writing his own scripts, selecting music, editing footage and continually looking for funding.

Phillips said the most important outcome of “Discovering Alabama” was it sparked the interest of people across the state. The interest led to the creation of Alabama’s “Forever Wild” program. Since the show started and “Forever Wild” was created, the state has put aside the Tensaw Delta, Turkey Creek and several other spots for free recreational use.
