A steady stream of visitors stopped by fab’rik as part of a fundraiser for Hope Scarves.

Former Homewood resident Lara MacGregor founded Hope Scarves in 2012 after her experience fighting breast cancer. A friend of a friend gave her a package full of scarves and a note saying, “You can do this.”

She wore the scarves during her battle with cancer and chose to pass the scarves to another woman going through treatment. Hope Scarves is a way to share inspiration and encouragement through the scarves with other women fighting cancer.

So far, Hope Scarves has sent 3,000 scarves at no cost to the recipient. Each scarf comes with tying instructions and the story of a fellow cancer survivor.

The March 14 fundraiser supported a new initiative called Sweet Hope Alabama, which aims to provide scarves to patients through oncology offices in Birmingham.

Attendees could purchase bracelets that were made with donated scarves that were too small to use, or they could sponsor a scarf for $30. A mannequin set up by the Hope Scarves table wore a skirt of scarves representing those that would be donated to patients.

Of purchases made during the event, fab’rik also donated 20 percent of the proceeds to Sweet Hope Alabama.

MacGregor said anyone can donate a scarf and their own story if they’ve gone through a cancer battle. The ideal scarf is square and about 30 square inches or larger.
