On the eve of Halloween, 40 witches cruised through Homewood not on broom but on bike.

The group, dubbed the Witches of Homewood, rode in memory of organizer Janie Ford Mayer’s mom, Paula Stringfellow Ford. Ford loved to dress up and organized a Witches of South Walton event in Florida until she passed away from cancer earlier this year.

“We are taking one the events she enjoyed doing and do it in Homewood,” Mayer said.

Wednesday evening the group congregated at Mayer’s studio on Linden Avenue before departing on their ride, which concluded with a champagne toast in Edgewood.

If the lively cackling heard down the streets of Homewood was any indication, the Witches of Homewood lived up to Ford’s legacy rooted in one key word — fun.

Mayer hopes to make the event an annual one and to use it to raise money for cancer research in her mother’s memory.
