Mary Ellen Snell announced her candidacy today for the Ward 1 Place 1 seat on Homewood City Council. This position is currently held by Michael Hallman, who has not announced if he intends to seek re-election.

Snell has lived in Homewood since 2002 and is a Ward 1 resident. She has not held an elected office before, but co-founded the East Edgewood Neighborhood Watch in 2009 and has been the coordinator since. Snell has also been involved at Dawson Family of Faith, Sims Garden and the Southern Environmental Center.

While campaigning, Snell said she has put a stay on most volunteer activities, including the neighborhood watch.

"I‘ve participated as a resident through our city governing process, advocated for budget items, attended and contributed to public hearings and city meetings. Some of the things I have advocated for are: police dogs, improvement of Edgewood Shops parking lots, community garden [and] Sims Gardens," Snell said in a release. "I have spent time and energy to follow our governing processes and I have encouraged other residents to do the same. I am happy with our results as a respected and valued Watch group. Our group will continue to inform and encourage others to be aware and actively participate in their neighborhoods."

Snell said her main campaign issues will be focused on responsible growth in the city and representing Ward 1's needs. She said her background in business, volunteering and management will translate well into an elected role.

"I believe in using process and procedures, policies and strategies, objectives, goals and a plan to accomplish things. All of this is pertinent to good business and good city governance," Snell said.
