Work crews will begin resurfacing and striping Valley Avenue within about a month, according to Sandra Bonner at ALDOT.

The Valley Avenue project totals 2.7 miles, including West Valley Avenue from Barber Court to Green Springs Highway and Valley Avenue from Birmingham city limits to the Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard South intersection. It was let for bid at the end of August, and Bonner said the chosen contractor will be awarded the bid and given notice to proceed within 30-45 days of the bid letting being posted.

The project, which will change Valley Avenue from a four-lane to a three-lane road, is estimated to cost between $1.35 million and $1.65 million, depending on the contractor chosen. The contractor will have a pre-construction meeting with ALDOT, Bonner said, in which he can make requests such as working only at night or during the day.

After the notice to proceed, Bonner said the project will be completed in 45 working days, which are weekdays without weather or holidays interfering. During ozone alert days in October, the construction crews will not be allowed to close lanes. Otherwise, the project will involve some lane closures but never the entire street.
