A proposal to build six new townhomes on Columbiana Road received a favorable recommendation from the planning commission at its Oct. 6 meeting.

A representative from Progressive Properties, which owns the subject property at 818 Columbiana Road, said the townhomes would be 1,600-1,800 square feet and include a driveway and garage. There would be two parking spaces per unit, plus seven overflow spaces, and there would be no connection to Green Springs Highway. Starting prices for the homes would be in the $300,000s.

The property has been vacant for several years and was originally slated for office buildings, but the owners felt townhomes would be a better fit for the area. In response to concerns about longterm appearances of the property, the owners said that a homeowners association would be a definite part of the plans.

The commission unanimously voted in favor of rezoning the property from Office District to Attached Dwelling Unit district. Their recommendation will go before the council for final approval.

The commission plans to hold a special meeting just for discussion of the Planned Mixed Use District amendment, but otherwise there will not be a commission meeting until December.
