Only one contested seat in Ward 4

Both Barry Smith and Alex Wyatt are running for re-election, but Smith is the only one with an opponent for her seat. Wayne Qualls has qualified to campaign against Smith for Ward 4 Place 1.

Smith, a 20-year resident of Homewood, was appointed in 2014 to serve the remainder of Jenifer Champ-Wallis' term. Her main issues include neighborhood safety, addressing speeding, a new public safety building and balancing growth with neighborhood preservation.

"I strive to be responsive to the people in my ward. I have enjoyed getting to know my neighbors and helping them with issues of importance to them. There are so many things, like street paving and sidewalks, that we've started that I want to see through," Smith said.

Smith lives on Crest Drive with her husband Kyle and two sons, and works as the director of parents' day out and the nursery at Trinity United Methodist Church. She is involved in the community through Trinity, Meals on Wheels, Homewood City Schools Foundation and the College Choice Foundation. Smith is the council liaison to the Homewood Arts Council.

Wyatt does not have opposition, but this will be his first elected term. Wyatt was selected in 2015 to serve the remainder of Heather Reid's term.

Wyatt is an attorney at Parsons, Lee & Juliano and a 15-year Homewood resident, with his wife Megan and son and daughter. He said his major issues for the upcoming term will be encouraging economic growth and planning for the recent population growth Homewood has experienced.
