New Citizen Police Academy session to begin

The upcoming session of the Homewood Citizen Police Academy will begin next month.

The academy begins Sept. 3 and runs for seven consecutive Tuesday nights.

The Citizen Police Academy was first started in the mid-1990s by the Homewood Police Department as a means of providing the community a connection with the police department. The Citizen’s Police Academy allows citizens to witness the way the HPD handles the responsibilities of security and community service on a day-to-day basis.

Through presentations and demonstrations by the officers, participants will learn techniques and resources officers use to train for duty, from traffic stops to drug enforcement.

Topics covered include: departmental overview, budget, officer selection, tour of headquarters, patrol, communications, corrections, jail, traffic stops, arrests, investigations, narcotics, tactical team demonstration and a range day where participates will be able to shoot various police department weapons.

Food will be provided for participants each night by a Homewood restaurant.

For an application and class schedule, contact Sergeant Eric Hampton at 332-6864 or eric.hampton@homewoodal.org
