Homewood Environmental Commission plants trees at HCS central office

by

The Homewood City Schools central office is looking a little greener after the efforts of the Homewood Environmental Commission. On Saturday, the HEC and volunteers, including a Boy Scout troop, planted 100 oaks and hickories in three locations on the property.

Thirty mockernut hickories and black, white and chestnut oaks were planted on the west side of the building, next to the parking lot. Fifty trees were planted on the south side of the building and its existing line of trees, and the final 20 were planted by the entry road, across from the central office’s sign.

HEC member Liz Ellaby said the planting is part of the commission’s “Green Skies Over Homewood” program to collect and replant native tree species. The central office was chosen as a planting site because many trees were lost during construction and the site is a visible display of the commission’s project.

The next planting will be Saturday, Nov. 8. The HEC and volunteers will plant 50 seedlings at the Homewood Senior Center. To learn more about harvesting and planting native trees, contact Ellaby at lizellaby@gmail.com.
