Hispanic Interest Coalition tamale presale starts Nov. 26

by

The Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama will host a holiday tamale sale to fund their social programs and efforts to share Hispanic customs with Birmingham.

HICA, which operates out of Homewood, began the tradition in 2003, but took a hiatus last year.

Orders will be taken online starting Nov. 26, Thanksgiving Day, and will run through Friday, Dec. 11.

As in previous years, tamales can be purchased by the dozen or half-dozen, and options include chicken with green sauce, pork with red sauce or pepper and cheese, and the pepper and cheese are completely vegetarian-friendly.

The tamales will be made by Hacienda Mexican Grill in Gardendale, as well as Mi Pueblo supermarket in Birmingham.

Tamales are $18 for a half-dozen with one filling, and $30 for a dozen with one filling.

This year, there is a new option for those looking for an entire tamale meal. “All That and a Bag of Chips,” which includes two half-dozens with the one or two fillings of your choice, as well as a jar of Salsa Senorita and a bag of tortilla chips, all in a festive holiday bag to-go. The “All That and a Bag of Chips” option is available for $45.

Salsa Senorita is a locally made brand that first partnered with the Coalition in 2013. Additional jars of salsa will also be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting HICA.

The event, which has sold over 70,000 tamales since its beginning, hopes to not only raise funds for the Coalition, but to also raise awareness of the special traditions that Birmingham’s Hispanic community has to share.

Customers can pick up their orders from 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Dec. 18 at the HICA office at 117 South Crest Drive in Homewood.
