Plans for the Exceptional Foundation’s parking expansion are moving forward

At its Oct. 16 meeting, the city council approved 6-1 an Estoppel Certificate and Landlord’s Agreement for the center’s plans for additional parking.

The council members looked at the drawings that now call for a 15-foot buffer with no entrances from Oxmoor Road. Council member Britt Thames said that residents around the property are now okay with this plan. Council member Walter Jones aid the city’s parking resolution will need to be updated based on the new plan.

Twelve to 13 parking spaces at the community center will be lost during the construction for the new parking area, according to Parks and Recreation Director Berkeley Squires.

Also at the meeting, the council ruled to no longer looking into traffic flow issues in and around Edgewood Elementary School during drop off and pick up times. The Public Safety Committee voted 4 to 0 to recommend dropping this item, and the council voted to do the same at its Oct. 16 meeting.

Additionally, a public hearing to rezone property on 18th Street South from commercial to institutional for parking for the Islamic Academy of Alabama was reset for Dec. 1.
