Edgewood residents are speaking out about a proposed parking lot in the neighborhood.

At tonight’s Special Called Meeting, the Homewood City Council will hold a public hearing to consider the rezoning of two lots on Oxmoor Road from Neighborhood Preservation District to Institution District. The change would allow The Exceptional foundation to build a parking lot on the site.

The two lots, 1610 and 1612 Oxmoor Road, are located behind the Foundation and across the street from West Glenwood Drive. They currently contain two residential structures.

According to an online petition created by Amber Kelley, objections to the parking lot for six reasons. These include a desire for homes instead of businesses in the neighborhood and concerns about increased traffic.

“I wholeheartedly support the important work done by the [Exceptional Foundation], which has provided services for a child in my extended family,” Jan Holland Kimbrough wrote on the online petition. “But the homes in the neighboring Preservation District are essential to the character of this neighborhood.”

The petition had 68 signatures as of 11:30 a.m. on March 31.

The hearing is scheduled for March 31 at 6 p.m. during the Council meeting at Homewood City Hall.
