Today the Children’s Dance Foundation announced a set of new programs and new name, The Dance Foundation.

The new name better reflects all the students that the foundation serves, said Executive Director Diane Litsey. The 40-year-old organization now teaches not just children but also teen and adult dancers. In total it serves about 2,000 students both in its downtown Homewood studio and at partner sites such as The Bell Center and the YWCA.

The foundation’s new programs include a class for infants and a Dance Artist Program from third to 12th graders.

“What sets The Dance Foundation apart is that we encourage our students to explore their imaginations, to become self-aware, to engage in creative problem solving and to enjoy learning,” Artistic Director Heidi Stoeckley said.

The Children’s Dance Foundation dances with students of all ages and abilities in a creative, non-competitive environment in its community arts center in Homewood and at more than 20 social service agencies, child care centers and schools throughout Birmingham.

It also plans to expand its programs for students who are learning English as a second language in addition to its existing work who are homeless and those with special needs.
