Creek cleanup set for this weekend

The Friends of Shades Creek are holding the 15th annual Shades Creek Cleanup Saturday, Sept. 28 from 8:30 a.m.-noon.

Participants can choose to get wet or stay dry. Friends of Shades Creek will provide snacks, trash bags, and gloves for participants and welcome all to participate. Canoes will be available for teams who work in the creek.

In the 15 years of conducting this cleanup, Friends of Shades Creek has removed more than 10 tons of trash from this creek. In addition to the ever-present plastic bags, other items including stoves, refrigerators, lawnmowers, bicycles and car parts have been removed from the creek.

Michelle Blackwood, president of the Friends of Shades Creek, points out that the purpose of this cleanup is not only to remove trash from the creek but also to let people see the beauty of the creek from a new perspective. Registration and command center is at South Lakeshore and University Park Place across from the West Gate entrance to Samford University.
