Committee to discuss animal control ordinances

Animal control ordinances are on Monday’s public safety committee agenda.

Homewood City Council has discussed extra regulations on certain dog breeds since July 20, and this is the first time a proposal will come before the committee. The issue came up when animal control officer Robbie Bagby Hurst request a new ordinance in response to an increase in dog attacks.

The potential of breed-specific legislation (BSL) or fines on owners prompted community discussion, including a highly attended committee meeting on Aug. 3. At that meeting, committee members agreed BSL was not their intended route.

Monday’s committee meeting includes a request for consideration of animal control ordinances. It is not a public hearing and no final decision will be made.

Other discussion at Aug. 17 committee meetings include:

• The public works committee is requesting consideration for an agreement with ALDOT to resurface a portion of Columbiana Road.
• The finance committee is requesting consideration by ClasTran for payment to help cover trips within the City of Homewood. The committee is also requesting consideration for a leasing agreement for a new mailing system and options for increased retirement benefits.
• The public safety committee is requesting consideration of traffic calming measures on East Edgewood Drive and Lancaster Road. Public safety is also requesting the consideration of a crosswalk on Valley Avenue.
• The planning and development committee is requesting consideration of an updated tree ordinance from the Homewood Environmental Commission.
