Committee to discuss animal control ordinances

Animal control ordinances are on Monday’s public safety committee agenda.

Homewood City Council has discussed extra regulations on certain dog breeds since July 20, and this is the first time a proposal will come before the committee. The issue came up when animal control officer Robbie Bagby Hurst request a new ordinance in response to an increase in dog attacks.

The potential of breed-specific legislation (BSL) or fines on owners prompted community discussion, including a highly attended committee meeting on Aug. 3. At that meeting, committee members agreed BSL was not their intended route.

Monday’s committee meeting includes a request for consideration of animal control ordinances. It is not a public hearing and no final decision will be made.
