Homewood Mayor Scott McBrayer spent most of the day on Monday, Feb. 10 meeting with department heads in preparation for winter weather entering the area. He arrived late to the Homewood City Council meeting on Feb. 10 and provided a report full of as much hope as he could muster.

"I think with this weather coming we're as ready as we can be," he said.

Homewood City Schools will be closed Tuesday, Feb. 11 in anticipation of hazardous road conditions. McBrayer said City Hall was slated to remain open, but that decision would be reassessed as the evening wore on.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting heavy winter precipitation for the greater-Birmingham area tonight, including possible accumulation of ice from freezing rain. The area will be under a Winter Weather Advisory from 9 p.m.-6 a.m. Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 10-11.

NWS reports precipitation will start out as light rain but could become mixed with snow, sleet and freezing rain later tonight and in the early morning hours. Heavier precipitation is forecast to track south of I-20 and could include up to 1/5 of an inch of freezing rain.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. The NWS is urging drivers to be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility.

"All we can do now is wait and hope we were right," McBrayer said.
