A little New Orleans (and Mobile) is coming to Homewood next week.

The Birmingham chapter of MOMS Club International, OTM (Over The Mountain Chapter) is holding a children’s Mardi Gras parade for all on Tuesday, March 4 at 3:30 p.m. Homewood Central Park.

“Floats” will consist of wagons and strollers, and children and moms decked out in purple, green and gold. Munchkins will be throwing beads and MoonPies to the lucky, but no doubt unsuspecting, patrons of Homewood Park. They will take a few laps around the park, so don’t be late.

Chapter Vice President Melanie Lewis said she got the idea for the parade because she moved here from New Orleans and didn’t want her son growing up deprived of all that “Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler.”

“I think the question is not, ‘Why are we hosting a Mardi Gras parade?’ but, ‘Why not?’ Shouldn’t everyone get to be in their own parade?’” she said.

Club President Eva Shelton Gonzalez, a former resident of Baton Rouge, also picke dup on the excitement.

“Mardi Gras is a time for us all to act [like we are] 4 [year old] again. What could be better?” she said.
