Homewood City Hall and the Homewood Community Center pool will light up with teal for all of September to recognize GYN cancer awareness.

At the Aug. 24 city council meeting, Homewood Mayor Scott McBrayer proclaimed the month as Ovarian and Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month.

The statewide initiative was created to raise awareness to these types of cancer, their impact on Alabama, the need for research and improved screening tests, and support for women battling these diseases. In its fourth year, the campaign includes ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal and vulvar cancers.

A kick-off for September's A State of Teal festivities will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, 5:15-8 p.m. at The Club.
