A Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority bus caught fire off of Bagby Drive by the Twin Towers bus stop Monday afternoon.

Barbara Murdock, chief of staff for BJCTA, said the bus came in late last evening and the incident is being investigated.

“We’re thinking because of the extreme temperature, there were some air conditioning issues,” Murdock said.

While there is speculation about the relation of high temperatures and air conditioning problems, Murdock said there is nothing conclusive at this time.

Two passengers were transported for treatment for smoke inhalation.

Following an incident like this, the driver is road tested and an incident report is filled out. BJCTA also gets witness statements during the investigation.

Murdock said she does not know how long the investigation into the fire will take at this time, and other operations will continue as normal.
