A Homewood gas station became an impromptu delivery room this morning when a new mother realized she wasn't going to make it to the hospital.

Homewood Fire Department Lt. Gus Murphree said he was first to arrive on scene at the BP gas station on the corner of Lakeshore Parkway and Columbiana Road.

"The mom had already delivered when I arrived," said Murphree. "She did all the hard work. She was holding her baby boy wrapped in a blanket."

Mom and dad had been on the way to the hospital, said Murphree, who said he arrived on scene shortly before 10 a.m. A BP gas station clerk confirmed the morning's events.

Homewood Fire Battalion 1 and Engine 3 responded. Mom and baby were then transported to UAB.

"Everything looked good," said Murphree. "Mom and baby are doing fine."
