Oak Grove acorn lamps up for council approval

A project is being considered to make Oak Grove Road a little brighter with 21 new streetlights.

At its April 6 meeting, the finance committee voted to recommend an agreement with Alabama Power to install and maintain the lights, which will have fluted concrete poles and glass acorn lamps. The committee noted that currently the only lights on Oak Grove Road are in Patriot Park.

The cost to the city would be $1,224.64 per month for the lights’ maintenance. This expense would come out of the street lighting fund.

Ward 2 Place 1 Representative Fred Hawkins said he’s hoping to have the project bid out by the end of April and have construction take place while school is out for the summer. It would be part of a larger repaving project that runs from the Hall Avenue intersection to where Oak Grove Road ends at Oxmoor Road.

“It would be great not to disrupt the school traffic that backs up on this road,” Hawkins said.

The project will come before the full city council for approval during its April 13 meeting.
