Lakeshore Foundation is not just a building. Lakeshore is a destination, a training ground, a place for kids, a science, an economic engine and an educator.

Jeff Underwood, the president of Lakeshore Foundation since 1991, addressed the Homewood Chamber of Commerce Sept. 16 and explained the mission of Lakeshore.

As one of the nation’s largest providers in fitness, sports and recreation programs for people with disabilities, Lakeshore serves about 4,000 people with disabilities annually.

Not only is the foundation a training ground as an U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site for athletes locally, nationally and internationally, but it also allows people with physical disability and chronic health conditions to lead healthy, active and independent lifestyles through physical activity, sport, recreation and research.

That research is through the UAB Lakshore Research Collaborative, which brings together the programs of Lakeshore with the research at UAB to change opportunities for people with disability across the globe.

Lakeshore also helps create jobs, bring people to Homewood to stay and spend and an contribute an annual estimated impact of $20 million.
