Demetri’s BBQ is one of 29 restaurants on the new Alabama Barbecue Hall of Fame, Governor Robert Bentley announced Tuesday. All establishments on the list have been open at least 50 years.

Greek immigrant Demetri Nakos, father of current owner Sam Nakos, opened Demetri’s in 1961. It has been in its current location on 28th Avenue in Homewood since 1973.

“The state of Alabama has become a destination for barbecue lovers across the country,” Governor Bentley said. “The hall of fame provides a way for us to celebrate the great restaurants that have made Alabama a tourist attraction.”

The Alabama Department of Tourism developed the list as part of its “Year of Alabama Barbecue” promotion highlighting the state’s barbecue heritage. Restaurants will receive a personalized plaque at a June 29 luncheon at the Golden Rule Bar-B-Q restaurant in Irondale.

According to a recent survey, barbecue restaurants make up the highest percentages of eateries in the state.

“Travelers are looking for an authentic barbecue experience and we want to help drive business to these great local establishments,” said Lee Sentell, state tourism director.
