Following a split on Friday, Homewood baseball fell to Oxford, 4-3, in the third and deciding game of the second round series of the AHSAA Class 6A State Playoffs on Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots scored three runs in the second to jump on top in the final game. Jake Burdeshaw, Jacob Fitts, and Josh Miller drove in runs in the frame for the 3-0 lead. However, Oxford got two of those back in the bottom half of the inning.
The Yellow Jackets would tie the game in the fourth, setting up an intense finish.
Homewood’s best scoring the chance the rest of the way came in the top of the seventh inning, but the Patriots stranded Burdeshaw in scoring position.
A hit batter and sacrifice bunt set the stage for a walk-off base hit to lift Oxford to the win and a spot in the third round of the playoffs.
John Marc Mullins got the start on the mound for Homewood and pitched five innings. Miller and Griffis worked the sixth and seventh, respectively, after pitching significant innings in the Friday doubleheader.
The two teams split the doubleheader, with Homewood winning the first one, 2-1, and Oxford taking the nightcap, 14-2.
The Patriots scored the only two runs they needed in the first game in the opening inning, with John Wildman and Burdeshaw getting RBI singles. Griffis earned the win, giving up a single run in five innings.
As was the case in all three games of the series, Homewood scored first in the second game. Oxford held just a 3-2 lead entering the seventh inning, but the Yellow Jackets plated 11 runs to put the game well out of reach.
The Patriots conclude the season with a 19-14 record.
