Homewood High School's football team needed just one series to find the end zone, and it never let up from there in a 31-14 win over John Carroll on Friday night at Pat Sullivan Field in the annual renewal of the Battle of Lakeshore rivalry.
Homewood drove the length of the field on its opening possession, getting a boost when John Carroll was flagged for encroachment on fourth-and-2 deep in its own territory. Jack Myers found Beckham Newell for the touchdown to make it 7-0 with 7:34 left in the first quarter.
John Carroll punted on its ensuing possession, and Homewood drove inside the John Carroll 30-yard line before a field goal attempt sailed wide with 54 seconds left in the quarter. The Cavaliers went three-and-out to close out the period.
Homewood took firm control in the second quarter. Chappy Chapleau capped a drive from Homewood's own 40 with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 with 7:16 remaining, and after another John Carroll three-and-out, quarterback Timothy Roshell scored on a 6-yard run to push the lead to 21-0 with 1:51 left before half. John Carroll's final possession of the half ended in an interception with three seconds remaining, following a weather delay, and Homewood carried a 21-0 lead into the break.
"I thought we got a little bit undisciplined in the second half, but that's the things you clean up between Week 1 and Week 2," Homewood head coach Ben Berguson said.
Myers and Newell connected again to open the third-quarter scoring, making it 28-0 with 7:12 left. Newell finished with seven catches for 81 yards and caught both of Myers' touchdown passes. John Carroll answered with a 44-yard flea-flicker from Aubrey Coker to TJ Richardson down to the Homewood 4, and Coker punched it in from two yards out to make it 28-7 with 3:06 left in the quarter. The Cavaliers recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but the drive stalled on downs.
Homewood pushed the lead to 31-7 early in the fourth quarter on a field goal that finished off a drive carried over from the third. John Carroll answered with its best drive of the night, a Carson Lewis pass to Kannon Hammock that gained big yardage down to the Homewood 10, before Manley Fleming scored from five yards out to make it 31-14 with 3:41 to play. An ensuing John Carroll onside kick attempt went out of bounds, and Homewood ran out the clock after recovering a muffed John Carroll punt return at the Cavaliers' 5.
Myers finished 10-of-15 passing for 147 yards and two touchdowns, while Roshell added 63 yards through the air and 34 yards on the ground to go with his rushing score. Chapleau ran for 50 yards and a touchdown, and Cyn'Mauree DeBruce added 46 yards on the ground. Kam Foster caught three passes for 77 yards.
Berguson pointed to one player on defense and special teams as a standout.
"Canon Tutor's the one that really impressed me. He did a lot defensively. I kept hearing his name on special teams, but he just had a big night," Berguson said.
For John Carroll, an eighth-grader stood out in his varsity debut. Richardson played both ways, contributing on offense and at linebacker.
"He's a baller. He handled it great. He's one of the ones going both ways, he's playing middle linebacker," John Carroll head coach Will Mara said. "He's one of the most humble, most quiet kids on the team."
Homewood improved to 1-0 and travels to Briarwood next week in a matchup both coaches are already looking forward to.
"Honestly, that's my favorite game of the year to play," Berguson said. "There's a lot of history and tradition between the two schools."
John Carroll fell to 0-1 and travels to Talladega next week.
